Leverkusen Coach and Director Address Victor Boniface’s Walkout
According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Monday, October 12, 2026, Bayer Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez and sporting director Simon Rolfes have reacted after Nigerian striker Victor Boniface reportedly walked down the tunnel in frustration during the club’s 4-3 Bundesliga victory over Mainz.
The incident occurred on Saturday after Boniface was once again left on the bench despite hoping to receive an opportunity to feature in the match. His frustration reportedly became evident when Leverkusen made their final substitutions without bringing him onto the pitch.
In the 84th minute, Martínez introduced Equi Fernández and Jonas Hofmann for Aleix García and Patrik Schick. With the team’s substitution opportunities exhausted, Boniface had no chance of entering the game and reportedly headed towards the dressing room before the final whistle.
The incident has attracted attention because the Nigerian international has struggled to secure regular playing time since the beginning of the season. According to reports, Boniface has made only one Bundesliga appearance this campaign, playing five minutes in Leverkusen’s opening-day 3-2 defeat to SV Elversberg. He provided an assist during that brief appearance.
Speaking after the Mainz match, Martínez said he had not noticed the striker leaving the bench area during the game. However, the coach indicated that he would speak with Boniface if the reports were accurate.
“I can understand that every player wants to help the team. At the same time, these decisions are part of football,” Martínez explained, defending his decision to make the substitutions.
Rolfes also addressed the situation, adopting a lighter tone while making it clear that the incident should not happen again.
“Perhaps he went into the dressing room a little too early today. It won’t happen next time,” the sporting director said.
Despite the warning, Rolfes praised Boniface for his progress in training and his conduct within the squad. He indicated that the striker had been improving his fitness and remained a positive member of the team.
The situation presents another challenge for Boniface, who previously played an important role in Leverkusen’s successful 2023-24 campaign. His limited involvement this season has raised questions about his position in the squad and his chances of returning to regular first-team action.
However, an opportunity could emerge in the coming weeks following an injury to fellow forward Christian Kofane. Leverkusen have several matches ahead, and Boniface will hope to convince Martínez that he deserves more minutes on the pitch.
The Nigerian striker could have another chance to demonstrate his ability when Leverkusen face Lech Poznań in the Europa League on Thursday.
For now, the club’s response suggests that Boniface’s frustration will need to be addressed internally as he continues his fight for a more prominent role in the team.
