KwaMakhutha anti-immigrant activist due in court

A KWAMAKHUTHA anti-immigrant activist was arrested in Durban for allegedly threatening to shut down Moses Mabhida Stadium and prevent the highly anticipated MTN8 Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns from taking place on October 10.

Siphelele “Magolide” Shinga is appearing in the Durban Central Magistrate’s Court today (October 12), where he will face a charge of inciting violence.

Shinga’s arrest and that of more than 30 protesters came after a spate of violent protests gripped Durban following widespread public anger over a Constitutional Court ruling and a subsequent Department of Home Affairs (DHA) directive that certain asylum seekers could register and be processed even if they lacked initial documentation. The department withdrew the directive after it was met with protests around the country.

Acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, commended police officers and other law enforcement agencies for decisive, intelligence-led interventions to maintain law and order.

“The police will not allow threats, intimidation or unlawful conduct to undermine public safety, disrupt sporting events or destabilise communities. Our responsibility is to protect lives, safeguard property and uphold the rule of law. We will act decisively, professionally and within the confines of the law against anyone who threatens public order,” said Dimpane.

She further called on communities to work with the police, share information and refrain from participating in unlawful activities that endanger lives and livelihoods.
