KP Irrigation Department restores Badri Pond to boost water storage
DERA ISMAIL KHAN – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigation Department is restoring Badri Pond in Badri village, within the Ramak watershed of Dera Ismail Khan district, under the Recharge Pakistan project to improve water conservation, enhance groundwater recharge and strengthen climate resilience.
The initiative aims to increase the pond’s water storage capacity, reduce soil erosion, improve natural water flows and rehabilitate the local ecosystem through sustainable infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

Under the project, around 415 metres of natural watercourse will be restored to improve water flow, while accumulated silt will be removed from the pond to increase its storage capacity. The protective embankments will also be strengthened, and water seepage controlled to improve water retention.
Five check dams will be constructed to slow water flows, control soil erosion and retain sediment. These measures are intended to mitigate the effects of flash floods and improve the conservation of local water resources.

The project combines conventional engineering techniques with nature-based solutions, using natural materials such as stone and soil to minimise environmental impacts and support the sustainable restoration of water resources.
According to project details, the pond’s storage capacity is expected to increase from 9,405 cubic metres to 29,404 cubic metres upon completion. Groundwater recharge is also projected to rise from 1.35 million litres to 2.16 million litres.
The initiative is expected to improve local water availability, strengthen water security, reduce land degradation and support the restoration of natural habitats. It is also intended to enhance the area’s ability to withstand the effects of climate change.
