Kenyan Teacher Reveals Amount of Money She Earns in China Per Month

A teacher working in Shanghai, China, has attracted attention online after details of her monthly earnings emerged, triggering discussions about teachers’ salaries and opportunities available to educators working abroad.

According to a report published by TUKO.co.ke on October 12, 2026, TikTok creator Boni Xaba shared details of the educator’s payslip, which reportedly showed earnings approaching KSh 1 million per month before deductions.

The teacher, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), reportedly works as a homeroom teacher at a primary school in Shanghai.

Her responsibilities include teaching Language Arts and Social Studies, with the educator reportedly handling four classes daily.

The salary breakdown indicated that her basic monthly pay stood at approximately KSh 600,000. She also received a housing allowance of about KSh 112,000 and a teaching allowance of nearly KSh 99,000.

Other payments included a semester bonus of approximately KSh 99,000 and overtime earnings estimated at KSh 30,000.

Combined, these payments brought her reported gross earnings to around KSh 940,000, leaving approximately KSh 910,000 after tax deductions.

However, the figures should be treated with caution because bonuses and overtime payments may fluctuate from one month to another. The reported amount may therefore not represent her guaranteed monthly salary.

The disclosure generated interest among social media users, with some expressing surprise at the amount while others noted that remuneration differs considerably depending on qualifications, experience and the institution employing a teacher.

International schools can offer competitive packages to qualified educators, although such opportunities often come with specific academic and professional requirements.

The story has also renewed conversations in Kenya about teachers’ salaries, working conditions and the possibility of pursuing better-paying employment opportunities overseas.
