Image: SAPS Police have confirmed the arrest of a suspect found in possession of an item belonging to murdered Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.
The confirmation comes amid reports that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the 38-year-old’s murder.
However, in a statement issued on Monday, 12 October, national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed only one arrest.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a possible charge of possession of stolen property.
“At this stage, no murder charge has been brought against the suspect. Investigations are ongoing,” Mathe said.
Moselakgomo, 38, disappeared on 9 September after leaving her Rhodesfield home for her usual afternoon run.
Her eight-year-old daughter, Khumo, raised the alarm when her mother failed to return at her expected time.
Police discovered Moselakgomo’s body in Rhodesfield on 12 September. Her family formally identified her at the Germiston mortuary two days later.
Moselakgomo was laid to rest in Phake, Mpumalanga, on 20 September.
As previously reported, Khumo delivered an emotional poem at her mother’s funeral, describing the pain of losing her and the memories she would carry with her.
The running community also rallied behind the child, establishing an education fund that had raised more than R230 000 by 21 September.
On 21 September, Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said investigators were making progress in the wider Ekurhuleni murder investigations.
“We are hopeful that we are getting closer to the truth,” Mosikili said at the time.
She stressed that police would not rush arrests without sufficient evidence to support criminal charges.
