Omar says federal raid seeks to target political opponents

US Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has condemned a federal search of her home, accusing the Trump administration of targeting political opponents and using law enforcement for political intimidation.

“Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote on X on Monday, October 12, adding that she would not be silenced.

The Minnesota lawmaker also described the operation as the latest escalation in what she called a decade-long pattern of harassment, accusing President Donald Trump of targeting her through what she characterised as baseless allegations and smear campaigns.

Omar’s congressional office denounced the morning operation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as an “outrageous abuse of power” and an “unprecedented escalation”.

The office criticised what it called a “pointless federal raid” and maintained that the congresswoman had done nothing wrong.

“No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies,” the office said.

According to the supplied report, federal agents executed a court-approved search warrant at Omar’s Washington, DC, residence at approximately 6am local time on Monday.

The US Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations carried out the judicially authorised warrant as part of an active federal inquiry concerning immigration documents completed during Omar’s childhood, the report said, citing Fox News.

Omar was born in Somalia and arrived in the United States in 1995 at the age of 12 after her family secured asylum.

The search comes amid heightened tensions between Omar and Trump, whose administration has pursued a tougher immigration enforcement agenda, including measures affecting Minnesota.

Omar, the first Somali American elected to the US Congress, has been a prominent critic of Trump’s policies.
