Ibrahim Mahama Begins Airstrip Works at Damang Mine

Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama has commenced preliminary work on a proposed airstrip at Damang in the Western Region, following his company’s takeover of the Damang Mine and his pledge to improve infrastructure in the area.

The development forms part of commitments announced by Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Limited, after the company officially took over the mine on April 18, 2026.

At the handover ceremony, Mahama announced plans to establish an airport in Damang within six months, saying the project would improve transport links between the mining community and Accra.

According to reports by Graphic Online and MyJoyOnline, initial earthworks have begun at the proposed site near the Huni waste dump. The project has also attracted the attention of relevant authorities, including the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly, which have visited the site to inspect progress.

The proposed airstrip is expected to improve accessibility for the mining area and support economic activities in Damang and surrounding communities. Better transport infrastructure could also make it easier for people, businesses and investors to reach the area.

Mahama’s infrastructure plans extend beyond aviation. At the mine’s handover ceremony, he also pledged to develop a road linking Damang to Cape Coast within two years and support the construction of sports facilities for nearby communities.

The road project is expected to improve connections between Damang, Subri, Praso and Cape Coast, potentially easing the movement of people and goods.

The proposed developments come as Engineers and Planners begins a new phase of operations at the mine, which was previously operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited.

The transition has raised expectations among residents and traditional leaders, particularly regarding local employment, infrastructure and community development.

In August 2026, community leaders reported that preliminary work on the airstrip and road projects was underway. They also highlighted employment opportunities created since the new operator took over the mine, while calling for the commitments to be sustained over time.

However, the airstrip remains a project under development, and its completion will depend on the necessary technical and regulatory processes.

The commencement of preliminary works marks an early step towards fulfilling Mahama’s promise to improve transport infrastructure in Damang.

As work progresses, residents will be watching to see whether the proposed airstrip and other development projects are completed as planned and deliver lasting benefits to the mining community.
