Police were first called to a shooting in Ashbury Court at around 6pm, where a 23-year-old man had been shot in the lower body.

Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said the victim was rushed to the nearest medical facility for treatment.

Mpendukana reported: “Kraaifontein SAPS has registered an attempted murder case following a shooting incident that occurred in Ashbury Court, Scottsdene on Sunday, 11 October around 6pm.

“A 23-year-old male victim was rushed to the nearest medical facility for treatment after he was shot in his lower body. Investigation is ongoing and no arrest has been made yet.”

About an hour later, at around 7.15pm, police attended another shooting at Busy Corner, also in Scottsdene, where they found a 33-year-old man shot dead.

Mpendukana said a murder case had been opened, but the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident were still unknown.

She added: “No arrest has been made yet and the investigation is currently ongoing.”

Acting Kraaifontein Community Police Forum chairperson Gavin Riddles said the latest incidents added to a growing number of shootings and killings in the area.

Riddles wysed: “Kraaifontein is turning into a graveyard. Murders and shootings have become the order of the day – accepted as the norm.”

Riddles claimed more than 50 people had died in Kraaifontein over the past three months, pointing to recent violence in Scottsville, Scottsdene and Wallacedene.

He said two sportsmen were among those killed in recent shootings, including incidents at Gabrielle Court and Watsonia Park.

“Not enough is being done to halt or curb this wave of violent crime. Many incidents have taken place even while the Army and Metro Police were present in the areas,” Riddles said.

“Enough blood has been spilled! Enough is enough… How much more?”

SAPS spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said his office could not comment on the CPF’s claim of more than 50 deaths over three months, as crime statistics are released quarterly.

The bloodshed in Kraaifontein has claimed more lives in recent weeks, including rugby players Daylon Galant, 25, and Eltino “Malkak” Fortuin, 27, who were killed in separate shootings in Scottsville and Scottsdene.

Two other men were gunned down in separate incidents at Gabrielle Court, while a 35-year-old man, Fhillipis Benjamin, was allegedly stabbed to death while selling firewood on Tibesti Street.
