Good News as President Ruto Announces New Prices For The Following Commodities, Effective November

Kenyan farmers are expected to benefit from reduced agricultural production costs following a new announcement by President William Ruto regarding the prices of essential farming inputs.

The President made the announcement while addressing worshippers and residents during a Catholic Church event in Likuyani, Kakamega County. According to the announcement, the new prices for fertilizer and certified maize seeds will take effect in November, providing farmers with more affordable options ahead of the planting season.

Under the revised government subsidy programme, a 50kg bag of fertilizer will cost KSh 2,000, representing a reduction from the previous price of KSh 2,500. The adjustment is expected to ease the financial burden on farmers who depend on fertilizer to improve soil fertility and increase agricultural production.

Certified maize seeds will also become more affordable, with a 2kg packet scheduled to sell for KSh 150 from November. The reduction is expected to make quality seeds accessible to more small-scale farmers, particularly those who have faced difficulties purchasing essential inputs because of rising production expenses.

President Ruto’s administration has continued to emphasize the importance of strengthening agriculture through policies that reduce the cost of production. The approach focuses on supporting farmers directly by making the materials needed for cultivation more affordable, rather than concentrating subsidies on finished food products.

The announcement comes as farmers in different parts of the country prepare for upcoming planting activities. Lower input prices could encourage some growers to cultivate larger areas of land and adopt improved farming practices to increase their harvests.

Agricultural stakeholders have consistently called for affordable fertilizer and certified seeds, arguing that high production costs can discourage farmers and affect food supplies.

The new prices are expected to offer additional support to farming households and could contribute to Kenya’s wider food security objectives. However, the overall impact will depend on the availability of subsidized inputs and farmers’ access to them when planting begins.

By reducing the cost of essential agricultural supplies, the government aims to strengthen local food production, improve farmers’ earnings and support sustainable economic growth through the agricultural sector.
