From incestuous royals to murderous clowns, HBO Max has enough drama to completely derail your evening
Nothing kills your plans faster than getting invested in a show where everyone is fucking, fighting or dying.
You could do something productive tonight. You could go to the gym, call your mum, clean the bathroom or finally deal with that email you've been avoiding for three weeks.
Or you could put HBO Max on and spend the evening watching adultery, murder, incest, sexual chaos, family warfare and people making decisions so catastrophically stupid that your own life starts looking impressively well-adjusted.
HBO Max is probably the easiest way to turn "I'll just watch something for a bit" into a five-hour descent into fictional depravity that leaves you staring at the clock wondering where the fuck your evening went.
Max Original Series The Pitt takes viewers inside a Pittsburgh emergency department, following the doctors, nurses and staff trying to make it through one incredibly demanding shift.
Noah Wyle stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, with the medical team dealing with an endless stream of patients, difficult calls and situations that can change in a matter of seconds.
The story unfolds across a single shift, so there's no convenient jumping ahead to next week when things get particularly stressful. You're stuck there with them as the hours tick by, exhaustion sets in and another emergency comes crashing through the doors.
New patients and fresh problems keep landing in front of the team, leaving very little time for anyone to catch their breath before they're thrown straight back into the chaos.
The medical pressure comes thick and fast, making The Pitt a pretty stressful, and very watchable, addition to your evening. After watching this lot work, complaining about your boss might feel embarrassingly tame.
The HBO Original Series DTF St. Louis brings Jason Bateman, David Harbour and Linda Lavin together for a hilariously dark drama about three people whose lives become tangled up in a seriously messy situation.
Bateman plays Marty, a married man whose affair with a younger woman sets off a chain of events that pulls him further into loneliness, desire and a relationship that becomes considerably harder to contain.
What starts as an affair quickly becomes much harder to predict, with each character bringing their own baggage, appetites and emotional hang-ups into the mix. Nobody gets to keep their little secret neatly tucked away forever, and the consequences begin piling up around them.
Things keep getting messier as the story unfolds, leaving you to watch a marriage, an affair and several lives become increasingly entangled.
The HBO Original Series A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms takes us back to the world of Game Of Thrones, this time following Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg.
Peter Claffey plays Duncan, while Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg, with the unlikely pair travelling through the Seven Kingdoms and getting caught up in adventures, rivalries and power struggles along the way.
The story is set roughly a century before Game Of Thrones, giving fans another part of Westeros to explore without simply retreading the original story.
And, naturally, sending a knight and his young squire wandering around Westeros is unlikely to result in a particularly quiet life. Here, political manoeuvring can turn into bloodshed, family grudges can last generations and a stranger offering you hospitality might be planning your downfall before dessert.
There are new characters to meet, old histories to uncover and enough Westerosi politics to remind you that power attracts precisely the sort of people you wouldn't want anywhere near it.
The HBO Original Series IT: Welcome To Derry heads back to the terrifying town at the centre of Stephen King’s story, exploring the history behind the evil that has haunted Derry for generations.
Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, while the series introduces a new group of characters caught up in the town’s dark past and increasingly disturbing secrets.
Set before the events of the IT films, the series expands the mythology around Derry and digs further into the place where all that terrifying business began.
There’s mystery, horror and plenty of unsettling moments, because apparently Derry residents have never had enough reasons to pack up and move somewhere else.
Horror fans, this is your chance to head back to Derry and see what’s been lurking there all along.
The HBO Original Series Euphoria follows Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, and her friends as they navigate relationships, addiction, identity, friendship and the many disasters that come with growing up.
The cast also includes Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer and Alexa Demie, with each character dealing with their own dramas while their lives continually overlap. But Euphoria quickly became bigger than its storylines.
Its fashion, makeup, music and visual style became part of the wider conversation, while its characters and performances gave viewers plenty to dissect long after an episode ended. And with so many details packed into each season, it’s prime rewatch territory. You can come back knowing where everyone ends up and still spot things you somehow missed the first time.
Between the fashion, the music and the absolute chaos of its characters’ lives, there’s no shortage of things to dissect.
The HBO Original Series House Of The Dragon takes audiences back to Westeros hundreds of years before Game Of Thrones, when the Targaryens are still ruling the Seven Kingdoms. The problem? Everyone has a different idea about who should inherit the Iron Throne.
Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans lead the cast as a succession crisis pushes the Targaryen family towards a brutal civil war. There are dragons, political manoeuvring, shifting alliances and enough family drama to make your own relatives seem remarkably well-adjusted.
A return to Westeros means another round of family drama, political manoeuvring and Targaryen chaos in House Of The Dragon. And because this is Westeros, nobody’s grand plan is going to go entirely according to plan.
The HBO Original Series The White Lotus takes viewers inside some seriously luxurious resorts, where guests arrive expecting a relaxing holiday and things inevitably go sideways.
Each season introduces a new location and a fresh group of guests and staff, with the changing cast bringing new personalities, secrets and problems into the mix.
The result is part murder mystery, part dark comedy and part extremely uncomfortable holiday drama.
You get the beautiful locations and five-star surroundings, but you also get affairs, arguments, suspicious behaviour and characters who seem determined to make their own lives much harder than they need to be.
With its rotating cast, including stars like Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza and Natasha Rothwell across different seasons, there’s always someone new to become obsessed with, suspicious of or completely baffled by.
The DC Studios Series Peacemaker brings John Cena back as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, following the character after the events of The Suicide Squad. His goal is technically world peace. His approach to achieving it is considerably less peaceful.
Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma and Steve Agee join Cena in a series packed with superhero action, ridiculous humour and a group of characters who somehow find themselves in increasingly bizarre situations.
Peacemaker is loud, violent and wildly confident in his own abilities, but underneath all of that, the series digs into the character’s relationships and the baggage he’s carrying around. It’s got explosions, absurdity and plenty of moments that make you wonder how this ever became an actual superhero team.
For DC fans looking for something with a little more chaos, Peacemaker has that particular brand of superhero nonsense covered.
And this is only the start of it, because HBO Max also has HBO and Warner Bros. titles, the DC Universe, Harry Potter, Discovery and plenty more waiting to eat up your free time.
So, if you’re after something worth canceling your evening plans for, head to HBO Max and find your next excuse to stay on the sofa.
