Farmers block highway over PR paddy procurement, MSP dues in Uchana
Farmers block Delhi-Patiala national highwayJind: Farmers on Monday blocked the Delhi-Patiala national highway near the additional grain market in Uchana Kalan for nearly three hours, demanding procurement of PR paddy with up to 17% moisture at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,461 per quintal. They alleged that despite MSP payments being credited to their accounts, they were later asked to return a portion of the amount, while excess moisture was also being cited to deny procurement or pay lower rates.SDM Suman Yadav (IAS) reached the spot to hear the farmers’ grievances.Farmers said that after six months of hard work, they were struggling to sell their produce at mandis despite the govt’s assurance that every grain would be procured at MSP, forcing them to take to the streets to press for their demands. The farmers asked the SDM who would take responsibility for ensuring that paddy containing up to 17% moisture was procured according to the prescribed standards and that they received the full MSP.After assurance from the SDM that she would take responsibility for ensuring compliance, farmers lifted the blockade. The SDM said paddy meeting the prescribed quality standards and containing up to 17% moisture would be procured at the MSP of Rs 2,461 per quintal. She urged farmers to file written complaints with evidence against anyone demanding money as deductions, assuring action against the accused.
