“Exit Bossman Asare. Enter Emelia Agbenyo” – Kwaku Azar Reacts After Mahama Swearing-In EC Deputies
Ghanaian lawyer and legal scholar Stephen Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar, has reacted to the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana following her swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, October 12, 2026, Kwaku Azar wrote, “Exit Bossman Asare. Enter Emelia Agbenyo. Da Yie!” His brief statement comes after the President swore in two new Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission.
According to a report by MyJoyOnline on Monday, October 12, 2026, President Mahama swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah at the Jubilee House. Their appointments fill vacancies left by Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey.
Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs at the Commission, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana. Samuel Tettey, who oversaw Operations, left the Commission after reaching the mandatory retirement age.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama urged the newly appointed Deputy Chairpersons to perform their duties fairly and independently. He emphasised that the Electoral Commission must remain impartial and operate within the law.
The President also stated that he did not expect preferential treatment for himself, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or his government. He stressed that all political parties must be treated equally and that the Commission must protect the right of Ghanaians to choose their leaders freely.
Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah brings experience in electoral administration, legal practice, public service and academia to his new role. He previously held several positions within the Electoral Commission, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.
Kwaku Azar’s post has drawn attention to the leadership changes at the Electoral Commission following the appointment of the two new Deputy Chairpersons.
