EPRA Hike to Raise Kenya’s Electricity Costs by Sh4.10 Per Unit in October
Kenyan electricity consumers are set to face higher power bills in October after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) introduced additional charges expected to increase electricity costs by about KSh4.10 per unit.
The new hike is likely to put further pressure on households and businesses that are already grappling with the high cost of living and tough economic times.
According to EPRA, the increase is as a result of adjustments in various pass-through charges that are factored into the electricity bill every month, including fuel energy cost and foreign exchange fluctuation adjustments. The regulator says these charges are necessary to cover the cost of generating and distributing power.
For a household that consumes 100 units per month, this means an extra Sh410 on top of their current bill. For small businesses, manufacturers, and posho mills that consume more power, the increase will be even higher.
Kenyans online have already expressed outrage over the planned hike, with many saying they are struggling to pay current bills. Many households have been shifting to alternative sources of energy such as gas and charcoal, but electricity remains essential for lighting and running businesses.
“Everything is going up – unga, fuel, and now electricity. How are we supposed to survive?” one Kenyan asked on social media.
The increase comes at a time when Kenya Power has been pushing for higher tariffs to boost its revenue, while EPRA has been defending the adjustments as necessary for a stable power supply.
Energy experts are now advising consumers to be more energy-efficient to reduce consumption. Simple measures such as using energy-saving bulbs, switching off appliances not in use, and using power during off-peak hours can help manage bills.
Consumers are advised to monitor their tokens and bills closely as the new charges take effect in October to avoid unexpected high costs.
The government is yet to announce any cushioning measures for low-income households.
