Eliminating terrorism in KP top priority, says Governor Kundi

PESHAWAR : Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has declared the elimination of terrorism the province’s top priority, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has pledged full federal support to restore peace and strengthen law enforcement agencies.

The statements came during a meeting of the provincial Apex Committee chaired by Governor Kundi, where participants discussed the law and order situation, counterterrorism measures, the capacity of security institutions and development matters.

Security and counterterrorism top priorities

Addressing the meeting, Kundi said managing the province’s affairs responsibly and providing a safe and conducive environment for its people were the government’s key responsibilities.

He said all institutions were on the same page regarding the restoration of peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding that the people wanted peace, development and prosperity. He stressed that all institutions must remain focused on their duties.

The governor said the capacity of law enforcement agencies would be enhanced and the requirements of the police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) had been met.

“We can sacrifice development, but not security,” Kundi said, adding that the government’s measures against terrorism would become clearly visible.

He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was rich in resources, but peace was essential to utilise its resources and development opportunities effectively.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said it was the first time that the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments were on the same page regarding counterterrorism efforts.

He said the people of the province wanted to get rid of terrorism and live in peace. He added that the government would strengthen the police and other law enforcement agencies, emphasising the need to provide modern weapons to the KP police.

Naqvi said provincial police personnel continued to make sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. He maintained that the province could win the war against terrorism if the provincial government took the lead.

The interior minister assured that the federal government would fulfil its responsibilities to establish peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and provide all possible support to strengthen security institutions.

Naqvi said the federal government had repeatedly asked the previous PTI-led provincial government to participate in the fight against terrorism.

He alleged that the previous provincial leadership had instead focused on blocking roads and creating unrest in the province.

The interior minister also praised the public for remaining peaceful amid the prevailing situation, reiterating that strengthening law enforcement agencies and eliminating terrorism remained essential to restoring lasting peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
