EC Finally Appoints New Deputy Chair Months After Bossman Asare’s Resignation

According to a report by JoyNews on Monday, October 12, 2026, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has appointed Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as its new Deputy Chairperson, months after Dr Bossman Asare resigned from his position.

Dr Asamoah is a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He brings more than 17 years of experience in public service, legal practice, academia and electoral administration to his new role.

His appointment follows changes in the Commission’s senior leadership, which created vacancies in its top management. Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana.

Meanwhile, Samuel Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson responsible for Operations, retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age. The government announced the developments in June 2026.

Dr Asamoah previously held several senior positions at the Electoral Commission, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

He also participated in the management of major electoral exercises in Ghana, including the 2012 and 2016 general elections, the 2010 and 2015 district-level elections, and the 2019 referendum that led to the creation of six new regions.

One of his notable contributions came during the 2016 general elections when the Electronic Results Transmission System reportedly experienced problems. He developed an Election Results Management System that was subsequently used in declaring the presidential election results.

Beyond electoral administration, Dr Asamoah is a lawyer, chartered accountant and certified economist. He also lectures at Wisconsin International University College and serves as an adjunct lecturer at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

He holds a PhD in Political Economy and Diplomacy and has extensive academic and professional experience in electoral governance, public finance and legal practice.

His appointment comes at a time when the Electoral Commission continues to oversee Ghana’s electoral processes and efforts to strengthen public confidence in democratic governance.
