Dzifa Gomashie Fires Back at Critics of Joyce Bawah Mogtari

Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has condemned individuals criticising Joyce Bawah Mogtari over the type of handbag she carries, describing their behaviour as disrespectful and unacceptable.

Gomashie expressed concern that public attention had shifted towards Mogtari’s personal fashion choices instead of her professional achievements and contributions. She questioned why some people had chosen to focus on such a personal matter rather than acknowledge the capabilities and accomplishments of a prominent woman.

The minister was particularly critical of men who, in her view, should demonstrate greater maturity and sound judgment when discussing women in public life.

“I’ve seen men who should know better questioning the kind of bag Joyce Bawah Mogtari carries. The effrontery and audacity are appalling,” she stated.

Gomashie also challenged those criticising Mogtari to reflect on the achievements of women within their own families before making disparaging comments about other successful women.

“How many women of her caliber do you have in your own families?” she asked.

Her remarks have brought renewed attention to the scrutiny faced by women in prominent positions, particularly when discussions about their appearance, clothing and accessories overshadow their professional responsibilities.

The minister’s intervention reflects her concern that personal fashion choices should not be used to determine a woman’s worth, competence or contribution to society. She suggested that critics should place greater emphasis on women’s accomplishments rather than focus on what they wear or the accessories they use.

Mogtari, a prominent public figure, has become the subject of discussion over her handbag, prompting reactions from people with differing views. Gomashie’s comments have added another dimension to the debate by raising questions about respect, gender expectations and the treatment of accomplished women in public discourse.

The controversy has also highlighted concerns about the standards applied to women who occupy influential positions, with some arguing that their personal appearance often receives disproportionate attention compared with their work.

Through her remarks, Gomashie has urged critics to exercise restraint and consider whether their comments are fair and respectful. Her challenge to them to reflect on the achievements of women in their own families further emphasises her argument that successful women deserve recognition for their abilities and contributions rather than ridicule over personal choices.
