Diego Simeone speaks out on Julian Alvarez behaviour after £128m Arsenal transfer failure

According to a report by Football London on Sunday, 11 October 2026, Diego Simeone has praised Julian Alvarez’s attitude as the Atletico Madrid forward works his way back into the team following failed transfer moves involving Arsenal and Barcelona.

Alvarez came on at half-time during Atletico’s victory over Alaves, with Simeone impressed by the Argentine’s performance and determination.

Arsenal pursued the 26-year-old during the summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta looked to strengthen his attacking options.

Barcelona were also interested, with Alvarez reportedly missing several training sessions during the final week of the window amid efforts to secure a move to the Spanish champions.

However, Atletico refused to sell their forward, and he has since returned to contention under Simeone.

Speaking after the victory over Alaves, the Atletico manager said: “I thought Julian [Alvarez] looked good today. He came on with enthusiasm, eager to do well and help the team. He finished the match well.”

Simeone had also expressed confidence in Alvarez before the match, highlighting his condition and willingness to contribute to the team.

Atletico have made a solid start to the season but remain five points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after eight matches.

The club have also made their position on Alvarez’s future clear, particularly regarding Barcelona’s interest.

Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin insisted in August that the club wanted to retain the forward.

“Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atletico,” Gil Marin said.

He also made it clear that Atletico would not negotiate with Barcelona over a potential transfer.

Alvarez’s return to action will be encouraging for Simeone as Atletico look to maintain their challenge in Spain.
