Dennis Miracles Aboagye Condemns Appointment Of NDC Operative As Deputy EC Commissioner
NPP Director of Communications Dennis Miracles Aboagye has raised alarms over President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Affi Agenyo, the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto Spokesperson on Governance, as Deputy Electoral Commissioner.
In a Facebook post published on October 12, 2026, titled “Chairman Bamba can be EC Deputy chair or chair in this country and it will be fine…” Aboagye described the appointment as a dangerous precedent that threatens Ghana’s democratic stability.
He asserted that never in the nation’s political history has an active campaign spokesperson or partisan operative been appointed directly to the leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC), a body constitutionally mandated to remain completely neutral.
Aboagye warned that the decision destroys institutional norms and opens the floodgates for future administrations to systematically politicize the electoral referee. Utilizing sarcasm, he noted that if appointing active party spokespersons becomes accepted, then NPP figures like Chairman Bamba could similarly be appointed to head the EC in the future without objection—a scenario that would completely destroy public trust in election outcomes.
His critique highlights growing concerns among governance experts and opposition groups regarding institutional independence and executive overreach. Analysts note that public confidence in the Electoral Commission relies heavily on the perceived impartiality of its leaders. Appointing high-profile party communicators risks blurring the distinction between neutral election management and partisan interests.
Aboagye concluded that protecting democratic governance requires safeguarding state institutions from political encroachment. The controversy has renewed calls from civil society actors and political stakeholders to reform the appointment process for Electoral Commission leadership, ensuring the institution remains insulated from political influence and continues to serve as an unbiased arbiter of national elections.
