Daredevil teen risks his life by dangling out of a bus
By ASHLEY NICKEL, NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA 14:46 12 Oct 2026, updated 14:54 12 Oct 2026
A young passenger has sparked widespread outrage after footage emerged of him hanging from the back window of a moving bus on a busy road.
The teenage boy was spotted dangling from the side of the 199 bus, servicing Sydney’s Northern Beaches, on Barrenjoey Road at Mona Vale on Sunday night.
Footage from a passing vehicle captured the boy holding his phone in the air as he filmed himself hanging outside the open bus window.
The dangerous stunt has since attracted the attention of NSW Police, which is investigating.
Transport for NSW coordinator-general Howard Collins also condemned the stunt.
Windows on Sydney buses do not open and the vehicle would have been checked before it left the depot.
‘Within a second he could’ve hit something, like a tree or a lamppost, or fallen out of the vehicle and the motorists behind would’ve had no chance but to run them over,’ Mr Collins told Nine News.
He added that it was common for unruly teens to knock out windows to access the vehicle’s exterior.
‘They either take out the emergency window or literally kick the glass out, and then they do these acts,’ Mr Collins said.
Sunday’s incident follows a spate of similar antics of teens hanging from the backs of buses or cracking open emergency roof hatches.
N ot only do they risk causing transport delays but teens can face hefty fines if caught.
Passengers caught causing damage to a public vehicle can be handed a $400 on-the-spot fine or face a $2,200 penalty if the matter goes to court.
Serious property damage can result in a $5,500 fine or up to five years behind bars.
Mr Collins warned that one wrong slip around heavy vehicles such as buses can easily end in lifelong injuries.
‘I’ve attended incidents where the kid is lying on the floor with a severe injury, crying out for their mother. We don’t want that,’ he said.
Aussies online were quick to condemn the teen’s actions.
‘What’s wrong with kids today?’ one wrote.
Another added: ‘The kid would be loving this attention.’
The Daily Mail has contacted NSW Police for comment.
