Capitec ATM appears to pay out bundles of cash as people grab the money

A Capitec ATM in South Africa was filmed dispensing what appeared to be bundles of cash through its open collection slot, with R200 notes among the money piled up as the person recording the incident reached in and grabbed a handful. Receipts were scattered around the machine, while the footage sparked excitement and jokes online, including viewers suggesting they would rush to ATMs themselves and others recalling previous experiences of unexpected cash payouts from Capitec machines, with some claiming they had returned the money. The circumstances behind the apparent payout have not been confirmed.

One thing the post leaves open is whether the ATM had malfunctioned or whether the money was being dispensed as part of a normal transaction that went wrong. The post also does not say where the machine is located, when the footage was recorded or how much money was involved. Those details matter because they would establish what caused the apparent payout and whether the person who took the cash was entitled to it. Without them, the clip shows only the money piled up and the reaction of the person filming.

People reacting to the post treated the scene with excitement and humour, with some joking that they would rush to the nearest Capitec ATM and others recalling previous experiences of unexpected cash payouts from the bank’s machines. Some said they had returned money after similar incidents, while others said they would not have. The reaction focused on the spectacle rather than on confirmed facts about the payout.

What has not been settled is whether Capitec has commented on the footage or whether the money was accounted for by the bank. The circumstances behind the apparent payout, including whether the ATM malfunctioned and how much money was involved, have not been confirmed. The public is waiting for more information, because the clip has spread widely and the bank has not yet explained what happened at the machine.
