Burlington man facing second-degree murder charge after allegedly killing woman with flashlight

A Burlington man is now facing an elevated charge of second-degree murder after a fight at a home in Burlington's South End turned deadly.

The Burlington Police Department said Bal Khadka, 44, hit and critically injured his wife with a large flashlight at an apartment on South Champlain Street on Saturday morning. Investigators said the incident happened in front of three children.

Police responded to the scene and found an unresponsive woman lying in a bed with substantial head injuries. She was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center by the fire department.

Police said that the victim died on Sunday evening while receiving care at the hospital.

Detectives have submitted an affidavit to get the previous attempted murder charge elevated to a second-degree murder charge.

The court ordered Khadka held without bail at Northwest State Correctional Facility. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13.
