8 Nollywood Horror Films To Keep You Spooked This Coming Halloween

Nollywood has always thrived on creating horror films that not only instil fear and thrill but also give you a plot to think over, and this Halloween, to keep the spirits up, we list 8 Nollywood horror films from the 90s to this decade that will keep you spooked.

Koto Aye is one of the best horror films to ever come out of Nollywood, and decades after its release, it is still the best Halloween horror film to watch. The story revolves around the existence of witches and the occult world, and the fight against these evil forces. The original film was directed by Alhaji Yekini Ajileye, and it stars Yekini Ajileye, Margaret Bandele Olayinka, and Kazeem Adewale.

‘Nneka The Pretty Serpent’ is another two-part Nollywood film. It follows a woman’s desperation for a child, and the chaos that unfurls from her decision. With the first part released in 1994, the film is one of the best horror dramas to come out of Nigeria. It is famed for being the Nollywood film that started the trend of storylines involving demon-possessed subjects who are cleansed by pastors. Directed by Zeb Ejiro, the film stars Ndidi Obi, Eucharia Anunobi, Rita Nzelu, and Sam Loco.

Nollywood in the 90s was well-known for making the best horror dramas, and the ‘Diamond Ring’ is one of the best ones made during that era. It follows the story of a woman whose life begins to unravel after her engagement to a wealthy man. When she unexpectedly meets an old love who returns a Diamond Ring to her, she faces horrific events that alter the course of her life. The film was directed by Tade Ogidan. Some of the cast members are Richard Mofe-Damijo, Liz Benson, Susan Cave, Kunle Dada, and Bimbo Akintola.

This 1999 Nigerian horror movie was so well-done that it was eventually banned because of how horrific it portrayed witchcraft and how chilling the stories being told were. It is the perfect Halloween watch, and it tells the story of how dark forces used young children to sow chaos in their families’ lives. It was directed by Teco Benson and stars Charles Okafor, Hilda Dokubo, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Larry Okon, Patience Oseni, and Mary Ushie.

When two friends find a mythical sculpture in an abandoned shrine in the forest while serving at a National Youth Service Corps camp, one of them decides to take the figurine home, but unknown to them, the sculpture is from the goddess ‘Araromire,’ which bestows seven years of good luck on anyone who encounters it; after the seven years have expired, seven years of bad luck follow. This film is horror at its best and will have you feeling all the thrills of Halloween. ‘The Figurine’ was directed by Kunle Afolayan, who also stars in the film as one of the main protagonists. Other cast members are Omoni Oboli and Ramsey Nouah.

Inspired by the feared Madam Koi Koi myth, this horror film tells the story of a ghost wearing heels, haunting hallways, dorms and toilets in boarding houses at night. ‘The Weekend’ follows the story of a woman who unknowingly pushes her fiancé to take her to his family of cannibals. Although the couple are able to get away from the grasp of his family, her knowledge of their dark secret endangers her and opens her mind to a world beyond her; it would be nice to see a sequel where we find out if she wages war with herself on trying more human flesh after being introduced to it, or if her husband is wary of her after she finds out his family’s dark secret. It was directed by Daniel Oriahi and stars Uzoamaka Power, Bucci Franklin, Ekpenyong Bassey Inyang, Meg Otanwa, Gloria Anozie–Young, and Damilola Ogunsi.
