2027: INEC raises alarm over fake guber candidates list in circulation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication purporting to announce governorship candidates for the 2027 elections in six states, urging the public to disregard the list and stop its circulation.

The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

INEC described the publication as fraudulent, insisting that it did not originate from the commission, reports Daily Trust.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the electoral body said in a statement.

The commission also dismissed claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states.

“The Commission further wishes to clarify that any information suggesting that INEC has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the aforementioned states is false,” it added.

INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the purported list and refrain from sharing it, warning that the circulation of unverified electoral information could mislead the public.

The electoral umpire advised citizens to verify information concerning the 2027 general elections through its official communication channels rather than relying on unverified online publications.

It listed its website as inecnigeria.org and its verified social media accounts as @inecnigeria on X and Instagram, with INEC Nigeria as its Facebook page. The commission also identified inecnews.com as its news portal.

INEC reiterated its commitment to providing accurate electoral information, urging Nigerians to exercise caution and rely on verified sources to avoid falling victim to misinformation ahead of the 2027 elections.
