In fact, the White Sox made some pretty unfortunate MLB postseason history with their offensive outing on Saturday. Chicago struck out 21 times, which is now the record for the most strikeouts in a nine-inning playoff game, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. The previous record was also made by the White Sox in Game 3 on Wednesday, when they were struck out 19 times in the 9-3 loss. This is not a record you want to end your disappointing finish to the postseason on. It's no secret Cleveland's pitching staff is elite, and this divisional series just proved that. Starting ace Gavin Williams completed a whopping 12 strikeouts in his 5.2 innings pitched on Saturday. Williams pitched against the White Sox in Game 2 on Monday, recording 11 strikeouts. He came in as a reliever in Game 4 on Thursday and completed one strikeout, bringing his total to 24 strikeouts against the White Sox. Erik Sabrowski only threw one strikeout on five pitches, but arguably during the biggest moment of the game—the White Sox had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but he struck out Munetaka Murakami to end the inning. In the seventh inning, Hunter Gaddis entered the game and threw four strikeouts. Reliever Cade Smith closed out the game with a final four strikeouts. The Guardians will have a quick turnaround as they start the ALCS on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. If Cleveland makes the World Series, it will mark their first appearance since 2016.
