Weatherman Addresses Public Concerns Over El Niño and Seasonal Rainfall

The Weatherman has clarified why presence of El Niño does not necessarily translate into heavy rainfall across Kenya, amid growing public concern over the delayed arrival of anticipated October-December rains.

In a public statement, the weather agency explained that El Niño is characterized by unusually high sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

While this climate phenomenon can impact weather patterns globally, it does not directly dictate the amount of rainfall in Kenya.

The agency emphasized that rainfall in Kenya is influenced by various interacting factors, including conditions in the Indian Ocean, prevailing winds, and other atmospheric systems.

These factors can either enhance the effects of El Niño, leading to increased rainfall, or counteract it, reducing its impact.

As a result, a strong El Niño event does not ensure that heavy rain or flooding will occur across entire country.

The agency is actively monitoring changing climate conditions to better understand how these different factors may affect Kenya’s weather in upcoming weeks

Additionally, the weather service noted that some regions have already begun to receive rainfall, with more showers anticipated as the season advances.

This clarification follows President Ruto’s concerns about the accuracy of earlier rainfall predictions, particularly as Kenyans awaited the expected rains despite forecasts suggesting an earlier arrival.

The uncertainty surrounding these predictions has created anxiety among farmers and households reliant on seasonal rainfall for agriculture, water availability, and other activities.

The weather authority has urged the public to rely on official forecasts instead of assuming that El Niño guarantees heavy rainfall.

Their statement underscores the need to consider multiple climate influences when forecasting weather patterns in various regions.
