Unfinished Madina Market Building Raises Safety Fears as Traders Work Under Crumbling Structure
An abandoned two-storey building at the old Madina Zonal Council in the Madina Market has become a serious safety concern for traders and customers, with many still conducting business beneath the deteriorating structure despite warnings about the dangers it poses.
Traders say the building has been left unfinished for years. It now has exposed metal rods, weakening walls, and sections that appear close to collapsing, raising fears for the safety of those who trade in and around the facility.
A visit by TV3 News on Saturday found that some traders were still selling goods beneath the structure, while others had turned parts of the unfinished building into storage areas. The situation has renewed worries about the safety of traders, customers, and other market users who visit the area daily.
According to traders, construction of the two-storey building began in the early 2000s but was never completed. The project was reportedly intended to provide space for about 200 people once finished, but it has instead become a source of danger due to years of neglect.
Signs of deterioration are clearly visible, including exposed metal rods and damaged walls. Parts of the structure appear to need urgent inspection and repair.
The building has remained unused for its intended purpose for years, even as trading continues in the surrounding market. Traders and customers now face daily risks from the crumbling structure, and there are growing calls for authorities to assess the building and take action before any tragedy occurs.
