Trump Suggests Renaming Atlantic Or Pacific The ‘Trump Ocean’

President Donald Trump suggested Saturday that he could rename the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean after himself, adding to the growing list of geographic features he has sought to rebrand.
The remarks continue a pattern that began on Trump’s first day back in office. In January 2025, he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. He also restored the name Mount McKinley to Alaska’s Denali, North America’s tallest peak.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump said the country still needed a new name for one of its oceans. He said he was considering either the Atlantic or the Pacific and that “we’d call it Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americas, something like that.”
The comment drew laughter and applause from the crowd. Trump presented the idea as the next step in a series of renamings during his second term.

“We’ve got the Gulf, we’ve got a beautiful lake,” Trump said, adding that someone had told him he also needed a river.
“We need a river. We need an ocean,” he said.
Trump made clear there were limits. He said he did not want to change the name of the Hudson River, and he also took the Mississippi off the table. He did not say which river he might choose instead.
“I think that before I leave, we should have our own ocean,” Trump told the crowd. He did not say whether he planned to take any formal steps toward a renaming, and the White House has not announced any action.
The Gulf renaming sparked conflict with the press. The White House restricted The Associated Press’s access to some events after the news agency kept using the name Gulf of Mexico.
In August, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario, which forms part of the border between the U.S. and Canada, as Lake America. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change. Trump personally asked Apple to use the new name in its mapping service.
Renaming an ocean would be a much bigger undertaking. A president can change the names of geographic features inside the United States for federal use, but the Atlantic and Pacific border dozens of countries. Other nations and international mapping bodies would be under no obligation to adopt a new name.
Trump’s allies have floated similar ideas before. In 2024, Rep. Greg Steube (R-Florida) introduced legislation to rename the waters off U.S. coasts the “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States.” The bill did not advance.
Musician Kid Rock opened Saturday’s wide-ranging rally. Trump also used it to promote a $6 billion investment by Korea Zinc in Tennessee and to call Iran’s leaders “crazy.”
