Today’s Headlines: 2027 will be Atiku’s easiest election; hungry Nigerians will vote for him — Shaibu; Ukraine needs a new president – Trump

Phrank Shaibu, a communication aide to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has said the 2027 presidential election will be the easiest for his principal, predicting that Nigerians struggling with economic hardship will vote for him.

Shaibu said Atiku would gain additional votes from Nigerians dissatisfied with the economic conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He stated this during an interview on the Mic On Podcast while responding to a question about how Atiku could improve on his performance in the 2023 presidential election, when he secured 29 per cent of the votes, amid Tinubu’s incumbency and political structure.

US President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelensky of repeatedly rejecting opportunities to reach a deal to end the war with Russia.

Speaking at the White House on Saturday, Trump said Zelensky had failed to take advantage of opportunities to negotiate an end to the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“Zelensky could have settled this war many times, and he chose not to. It’s very difficult,” Trump told reporters, insisting that the war would not have started if he had been president when Russia invaded.

Manchester City face a hostile Anfield on Sunday when the Premier League leaders play bitter rivals Liverpool in their first game since being found guilty of breaking more than 100 financial rules.

In a decision that could have a drastic effect on the future of the Premier League, an independent commission found City and their Emirati owners had arranged “sham” deals to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) between 2009 and 2018.

The multiple breaches of Premier League laws came during a period in which City won three titles and a clutch of other trophies.

During that time, Liverpool struggled to break City’s stranglehold on the game in England.
