Three Strikers Manchester United Could Sign in the Winter Transfer Window
According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Sunday October 11, 2026, Manchester United could target a new striker in January as Michael Carrick looks to improve their struggling attack, with Igor Thiago, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Alexander Sorloth emerging as potential options.
United sit 13th in the Premier League, winning just one of their last six matches. Their attacking struggles have intensified, with only two goals scored across their previous three league fixtures.
Benjamin Sesko’s shin injury has complicated matters, particularly because surgery remains possible. His replacements lack his physicality and aerial strength, while Joshua Zirkzee’s potential move to Napoli could create room for another forward.
Igor Thiago would offer United proven Premier League quality. The Brentford striker scored 22 league goals last season, finishing behind only Erling Haaland, and has established himself as a dangerous attacking presence.
Beyond scoring, Thiago recorded 436 successful passes, completed 29 dribbles and created 24 chances. His defensive contributions, recoveries and effectiveness in ground and aerial duels could suit United’s playing style.
However, Brentford would likely demand a substantial fee for their influential striker. Negotiations could prove difficult if United seek to control spending while the London club resist losing their leading goalscorer.
Jean-Philippe Mateta presents another option after scoring consistently for Crystal Palace. The Frenchman has surpassed ten Premier League goals in each of the last three seasons, offering the reliability United desperately need.
Mateta also contributes physically, winning 67 aerial duels and 110 duels overall last season. However, Palace could demand a significant fee and remain reluctant to sell an important player midway through the campaign.
Alexander Sorloth provides another possibility, having scored 24 goals during the 2024/25 season and followed that with 20 more. The Atletico Madrid forward offers strength and impressive ability in aerial contests.
Nevertheless, Sorloth’s passing accuracy and creativity appear less impressive than those of his rivals. At 30, he also offers less long-term development, although his transfer fee might be comparatively affordable.
