Monique Muller, the former partner of South African television personality Katlego Maboe, has opened up about her alleged traumatic experience inside Pollsmoor Correctional Centre, raising serious questions about the conditions she claims to have encountered during her detention.

Muller reportedly spent nearly three weeks in detention in October 2025. Speaking to Sunday World, she described alleged overcrowding, poor sanitation, limited access to medical care and disturbing incidents involving fellow detainees.

According to Muller, her arrest followed a night out when she accepted a lift from a group of people. She claimed that metro police stopped the vehicle and discovered a firearm beneath the driver’s seat, resulting in the arrest of all six occupants.

Muller maintained that the firearm did not belong to her. The charges against her were subsequently withdrawn.

However, she alleges that her time at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre exposed her to conditions that were difficult to endure.

Muller claimed that approximately 90 women were accommodated in a single cell with only one toilet and a broken shower. She also alleged that detainees had extremely limited opportunities to go outside, saying they were allowed out for just 15 minutes on two occasions during her stay.

Access to telephone services was another concern she raised, claiming that communicating with people outside the facility was difficult.

Her account also included allegations of serious incidents involving other inmates. Muller reportedly described a woman giving birth inside a cell, another detainee having her finger bitten off, and an inmate being severely assaulted without prison officials intervening immediately.

She further alleged that an injured detainee waited three days before receiving medical attention. According to her account, complaints about the conditions could also result in threats from warders.

These claims have been strongly disputed by the Department of Correctional Services, which reportedly described them as “completely fallacious”. The department maintains that appropriate healthcare, security and oversight measures are in place within correctional facilities.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and the department’s response highlights the dispute surrounding Muller’s account.

Beyond her detention, Muller has also suggested that reports surrounding her arrest have been used against her in an ongoing custody dispute involving her son with Maboe.

The former couple previously attracted considerable public attention in 2020 following allegations of infidelity and domestic abuse, which Maboe denied. In 2022, a Cape Town court cleared him of misconduct allegations.

Muller’s latest claims have once again placed the former couple in the public spotlight. However, the allegations concerning Pollsmoor remain disputed, and further independent confirmation would be necessary to establish the circumstances she described.
