‘That’s Impossible’—Michael Carrick Warned Man United Must Make Midfield Change After Tottenham Draw

According to a report by Metro on October 11, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been warned that his team could suffer heavy defeats against stronger opponents unless he makes important changes to his midfield following their disappointing 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

United dropped two valuable points at Old Trafford on Saturday after conceding a late equaliser against a Tottenham side reduced to 10 men. Bryan Mbeumo had given the hosts the lead in the 73rd minute, but Dominic Solanke struck in stoppage time to secure a point for Spurs.

Despite Tottenham’s numerical disadvantage following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal in the 78th minute, United struggled to control the game. Spurs created several promising opportunities and arguably looked the more threatening team throughout the contest.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy believes United’s midfield problems could leave them vulnerable against better opposition if Carrick fails to address the situation quickly.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy criticised the distances between United’s midfielders and defenders, arguing that the team lacked the organisation required to compete consistently in the Premier League.

He explained that Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo are technically gifted players who prefer having the ball, but their partnership has struggled to provide the physical work and defensive protection United need.

Murphy also stressed that the responsibility should not fall exclusively on the two central midfielders. He believes United’s centre-backs must communicate better with the players ahead of them, while the wide attackers should move closer to the midfield when the team comes under pressure.

The former midfielder warned that United could be punished heavily if they continue leaving large spaces for opponents to exploit.

“If they play like that against good teams they’re going to get cut right open because that’s impossible,” Murphy said.

Gary Neville has also questioned whether Tielemans and Mainoo are suited to playing together in midfield. The former United captain believes Carrick must consider changing the partnership to improve the team’s balance and defensive stability.

Carlos Baleba, who replaced Tielemans during Saturday’s match, could be an option if Carrick decides to make changes for upcoming fixtures.

United previously looked more organised during the second half of last season, when Casemiro partnered Mainoo in midfield. However, the current combination has struggled to reproduce that level of control.

Carrick has admitted that he is unhappy with United’s early-season points tally. The Red Devils have collected just six points from their opening six Premier League matches, winning only once.
