Sukkur Mayor meets Sindh CM to review city’s development roadmap, uplift projects

SUKKUR  –  Mayor Sukkur and Spokesperson to Sindh Government, Barrister Arsalan Islam Shaikh, held an important meeting with Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to review Sukkur’s development roadmap and ongoing uplift projects. Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Asif Hyder Shah was also present in the meeting. According to handout issued here on Saturday, the meeting held detailed discussions on modernization of urban infrastructure, provision of clean drinking water, drainage and sewerage system, construction and rehabilitation of roads, overhead bridges, renovation and beautification of parks, urban beautification, traffic management and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects.

During the briefing, Barrister Arsalan Islam Shaikh presented Sukkur’s comprehensive development roadmap and initiatives aimed at improving municipal services and transforming Sukkur into a modern, attractive and environmentally sustainable city.

He informed the Chief Minister that a comprehensive plan and operational model for a clean drinking water project in Sukkur has been prepared under the PPP framework. The project is awaiting approval from the PPP Policy Board. Once approved, the project is expected to provide clean drinking water to over 100,000 households and more than 650,000 residents of Sukkur. The meeting also reviewed improvements in sewerage and drainage systems, timely disposal of rainwater, measures to address urban flooding, ensuring smooth traffic flow and the proposed parking plaza project. The meeting laid emphasis on an integrated planning approach for Sukkur’s development, with special focus on construction and rehabilitation of major roads, road beautification, reducing traffic congestion, improving overhead bridges, and renovating parks, green belts and public recreational spaces to make Sukkur a well organized and more liveable city.

Barrister Shaikh also briefed the participants on projects presented for Sukkur at the Third Climate Adaptation Investment Planning Forum (CAIP 2026) held at the Asian Development Bank Headquarters in Manila.  He highlighted key aspects of the Sukkur Climate Risk City Profile and Adaptation Action Planning, including urban flood protection, water supply, heat mitigation, urban forestry and climate-resilient infrastructure. He stressed that incorporating climate risk strategies into modern urban planning is essential to prepare Sukkur and other cities of Sindh for future environmental challenges and emphasized enhanced collaboration between the Sindh Government and development partners.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah reviewed the development matters and issued necessary directions to the concerned authorities to accelerate progress on development projects, improve civic amenities and ensure effective implementation of initiatives in line with public needs.  The meeting reaffirmed the commitment to accelerate Sukkur’s development through close cooperation between the Sindh Government and the local government, effective coordination among departments and integrated planning.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah arrived at Sukkur Airport on Saturday. He was accompanied by Provincial Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, MNA Noman Islam Shaikh, District Council Chairman Syed Kumail Haider Shah, Mayor Sukkur Barrister Arsalan Islam Shaikh and Syed Asad Ali Shah. Divisional Commissioner Sukkur, Abid Saleem Qureshi, DIG Nisar Aftab, Deputy Commissioner Nadir Shahzad Khan and SSP Ahmed Faisal Chaudhry were also present at the airport to receive the chief minister. Talking to media representatives at the airport, the Chief Minister said he will be leaving for a visit to China from Monday. During the visit to China, 15 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed, he said.

He said important agreements will be signed in China regarding improvement and investment in Thar Coal.

“There will also be progress regarding setting up plants for manufacturing EV scooters,” he added.

The Chief Minister said Pakistan and China share a friendship spanning over 70 years, which was initiated by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

He said electricity production from Thar Coal has increased, and the additional production was inaugurated by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

The Chief Minister said a provincial NFC Award will be given so that provinces can generate their own resources.

He said subsidies are being given to growers to increase wheat production. “Wheat is available in abundance in Sindh and official wheat is being released to keep prices stable,” he said.
