SA Police Officer Who Allegedly Rape A Tazanian National In The Toilet Has Officially Been Charged
A 50-year-old cop from Springs Railway SAPS is sitting in the dock at Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court facing one of the most serious accusations imaginable. Warrant Officer Bafana Joseph Ndala stands accused of sexually assaulting a Tanzanian man who was locked up at Katlehong Police Station on the night of 25 September.
The detainee had been arrested for not having his passport on him, a simple immigration issue that turned into something horrifying. He was taken to the station for processing when he asked to use the bathroom around 19:00 to 20:00. That’s when things allegedly went terribly wrong.
According to what he told investigators, an officer escorted him to the public bathroom and subjected him to unwanted sexual acts before forcing him into a toilet cubicle. The man says he was terrified and shaking. He claims the officer warned him to keep quiet about what happened before sending him to the holding cells. Staff apparently noticed he was visibly distressed afterwards.
This isn’t just another case slipping through the cracks. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the body that handles serious allegations against cops, is all over this investigation. Ndala was arrested on 25 September and made his first court appearance three days later. Now the bail hearing is underway to decide if he walks free or stays locked up while the case plays out.
Here’s what’s really bothering people about this whole situation. A man gets arrested for a travel document issue and ends up allegedly assaulted by the very person supposed to protect him in custody. His immigration status doesn’t strip away his right to safety from sexual violence. That’s basic human dignity.
The case is putting serious pressure on how police handle detainees and whether the system actually investigates when officers cross the line. Public trust in uniform is already fragile in many communities.
So here’s the question everyone’s asking: how many more cases like this have slipped under the radar because people were too scared to speak up?
