Ruth Odinga Breaks Silence on Oburu’s Health After Death Rumours, Issues Family Statement

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has responded to rising concerns regarding her brother, Dr. Oburu Oginga, the ODM leader and Siaya Senator, following erroneous social media claims about his passing.

In a statement released on October 6, 2026, Ruth clarified that the Odinga family was aware of the false reports and emphasized that her brother was in good health and recovering in accordance with medical guidance.

The family expressed gratitude to those who sent supportive messages and prayers for the senator’s recovery. Ruth further encouraged the public, journalists, and social media users to be cautious when disseminating information about sensitive topics like health. She urged Kenyans to refer to official updates from the family and ODM leadership for accurate news on Oburu’s condition.

Ruth noted that the false claims had caused unnecessary worry for both the family and Oburu’s supporters, appealing for respect for his privacy and the necessary time he needs to recuperate.

This statement came in response to social media rumors of the 83-year-old senator’s death, which his son, Jaoko Oburu, condemned as irresponsible.

Earlier, ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga reported a visit to Oburu, where she found him in good spirits and steadily recovering.

Oburu’s office later confirmed that he was well and adhering to his doctors’ advice to rest and avoid demanding activities while still engaging in party and national matters, albeit at a reduced pace.

ODM Communications Director Philip Etale had previously clarified that Oburu’s visit to The Nairobi Hospital was merely for a routine check-up, refuting claims that he had been hospitalized urgently.

Since the passing of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025, Oburu has been leading the ODM party. His limited public appearances have garnered attention as the party gears up for the 2027 General Election.

The family has requested that Kenyans keep Oburu in their prayers and respect his need for privacy and rest as he recovers.
