Real Madrid Summer Signing Already Losing Prominence Under Jose Mourinho

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday October 11, 2026, Real Madrid summer signing Bernardo Silva is already struggling for regular playing time under Jose Mourinho after falling down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese midfielder joined Los Blancos on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer. His arrival raised expectations that he could help fill the creative void left by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Real Madrid had not recruited another central midfielder, making Silva an important addition to the squad. Mourinho initially included his compatriot in the starting lineup during pre-season. However, the Portuguese manager deployed him in a deeper midfield role rather than his preferred position on the right.

Silva struggled to make the expected impact when operating in the double pivot. Arda Guler’s impressive emergence and Aurelien Tchouameni’s return to fitness have further complicated his situation. Consequently, the former Manchester City captain has lost his starting position and is spending more time on the bench.

His absence against Villarreal on Saturday highlighted his declining importance under Mourinho. Silva did not feature in the encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu despite being available for selection.

The 32-year-old has featured in six matches for Real Madrid this season, starting three games and making three substitute appearances. He missed the fixtures against Villarreal and Elche. His only appearance across the club’s last three matches was a substitute outing lasting just over 10 minutes against Atletico Madrid.

Silva has accumulated only 282 minutes across Real Madrid’s eight La Liga fixtures. He also received limited playing time with Portugal during the recent international break.

The Champions League could provide another opportunity for the midfielder to impress. He missed Real Madrid’s meeting with Inter Milan because of a suspension carried over from his Manchester City days.

Mourinho’s decision against AS Roma next week will reveal whether Silva can regain his place or remain on the sidelines.
