Petrol bombs were thrown at a police vehicle in Co Tyrone in what has been termed a ā€œreckless attackā€.

Police said officers had been patrolling in the Ballycolman Estate area of Strabane shortly after 5pm on Saturday when their vehicle came under attack.

They said three masked males dressed in black each threw a petrol bomb at the passenger side of the police car as it passed.

Chief Inspector Cherith Craig said it could have led to serious injuries to the officers or nearby members of the public.

ā€œThis was a totally reckless attack in a built-up residential area and while only minor damage was caused to the vehicle, this could have resulted in serious injuries to the officers or to nearby members of the public,ā€ she said.

ā€œOur officers are here to help and to respond to calls to assist those who need that help.

Police are investigating the incident (PA)

ā€œAttacks on police are unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

ā€œAn investigation is under way and anyone with information which could assist with our inquiries is asked to contact police in Strabane on 101, quoting reference number 1073 10/10/26.ā€
