Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 episode 4 recap: Is Ellen pregnant with Brian’s child and what happens after Henry and Julia’s reunion?
Outlander: Blood of My Blood is the Starz prequel that follows the parents of Jamie and Claire Fraser. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts, who also runs the main Outlander series, developed the show from characters created by Diana Gabaldon.
Season 1 launched on 8 August 2025. Season 2 began on 18 September 2026 and runs for ten episodes, with new instalments arriving weekly on Fridays. Episode 4, “A Portion of My Soul,” aired on 9 October 2026.
The core cast returns for the second season. Harriet Slater plays Ellen MacKenzie and Jamie Roy plays Brian Fraser, the parents of Jamie. Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine portray Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, Claire’s parents. Supporting players include Tony Curran as Lord Simon Lovat, Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie, Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons, and others who fill out the clan politics and household intrigues.
The season places both couples in the middle of the 1715 Jacobite Rising, where personal choices collide with clan duty and the standing stones continue to complicate every plan.
Ellen MacKenzie and Grace ride hard to the Fraser camp after learning that Lord Lovat intends to hand Inverness to the Crown forces and trap the MacKenzie men who are marching toward it. Lovat has been promised the restoration of his title and lands by the Duke of Argyll in exchange for breaking his oaths to the MacKenzies.
Ellen reaches Brian in time. She lays out the scheme and the two of them, along with Grace and Murtagh, move to intercept Dougal before the MacKenzie column walks into the ambush.
Brian confronts his father directly. Lovat does not deny the plan. He argues that once Inverness falls for the Crown, Brian himself will gain status. Brian replies that an oathbreaker deserves no loyalty and announces he is choosing Ellen over the Fraser name.
Lovat effectively disowns him on the spot. Brian rides away with Ellen, Grace and Murtagh while Lovat sends Balloch after them to watch.
They catch Dougal’s men on the road and warn them. Ellen also tells Dougal that MacKinney’s men cannot be trusted and that Janet is dead. Dougal agrees to turn south toward Perth and join the Jacobite forces under Mar rather than ride into the trap. He and Brian put their personal differences aside for the duration of the fighting, though Dougal makes it clear the account between them will still be settled later if both men survive.
Lovat takes Inverness unopposed for the Crown. By the time the episode ends, Brian has no clan of his own and is riding with the MacKenzies into a war he never intended to join on these terms.
Henry arrives back in 1715 near Craigh na Dun and is captured almost immediately by Grant men. Arch Bug is prepared to kill him until Murdina sees the scars left by electroshock treatment and decides Henry has been marked by the fairies. She refuses to risk a curse after the loss of their own son.
Uncle Mac still wants a public punishment for the earlier “kidnapping” of Julia and the baby, so Arch pretends to administer the lashes. Henry is then sent out with the Grant forces as the price of his survival.
Julia learns of his return when a letter reaches Castle Leathers. With Davina’s help she dresses as a man, takes one of Brian’s blades, and rides to Bowmont. Henry spots her in the courtyard and gets her inside. The reunion is raw. Henry has lost large stretches of memory from the treatment. He does not remember their daughter Claire or the details of the life they left in the twentieth century. Julia is already furious because she knows about Seema.
Henry explains that he was told both she and William had died, that the grief broke something in him, and that the night with Seema happened while he was hallucinating that Seema was Julia.
Julia is less concerned about the act itself than the fact that he kept it from her when he had the chance to tell her. She tells him she will forgive him if he can find his way back to the man he was before the asylum.
They spend the night together. Henry talks about gathering three gemstones so the family can try to return through the stones once the war creates enough confusion.
Julia writes him a letter sealed with a kiss, the same way they used to mark their early correspondence, and tells him to bring it back with him. She mentions Maisri’s prophecy that she herself cannot travel again, though she managed it once while pregnant with William. Henry leaves with the Grants. Julia rides home.
While the larger political crisis unfolds, a quieter thread develops between Murtagh and Grace. Grace is in service to Jocasta Cameron and has been travelling with the MacKenzie forces. Murtagh has already shown interest in her.
At the camp he finds her by the fire and places his plaid over her shoulders against the cold. She steps away, unsettled, and he worries the next morning that he has misread her. Grace settles the matter by sewing a small white fabric flower into the sleeve of his shirt as a token for him to carry into the fighting.
The moment does not stay private. John Cameron, Jocasta’s husband, sees the two of them together. Later that night Murtagh witnesses Cameron entering Grace’s tent and attempting to force himself on her.
The sight lands hard. Hugh Cameron, who is already manoeuvring to protect the family’s position if the Rising fails, also notes the closeness between Murtagh and Grace. None of this resolves before the episode ends.
Murtagh is left carrying both the token and the knowledge of what he saw, while Grace remains in a household where she has little protection. The thread sits alongside the larger war preparations and adds another personal risk to a camp already full of shifting loyalties.
Yes. Ellen is pregnant with Brian’s child. After the warning about Lovat’s trap has been delivered and the MacKenzie men have changed course, she and Brian get a quiet hour inside his tent.
The conversation turns to Janet and how she would have liked Ellen. Ellen describes Brian as a man who gives up everything for a family that does not yet exist. He answers simply that the family is hers. She tells him she is carrying their child.
Brian’s first reaction is fear. He has grown up watching Lovat place land and title above loyalty and he does not want to repeat that pattern. Ellen reminds him that he has already chosen her over everything his father offered, so the pattern is already broken. The two of them end up together. Brian kneels and places his hands on her stomach.
Later he tells her the baby itself will be the token he carries into the fight. They part with him promising to return. Balloch is watching from a distance and sees the gesture, so the news is unlikely to stay entirely private.
For Henry and Julia the reunion does not end cleanly. Julia rides back to Castle Leathers expecting to check on William. The cradle is empty. Davina is gone. Seema is waiting in the room with the knife Davina gave her earlier.
Seema overheard enough of the earlier talk to realise Julia is Henry’s wife. She says she loves him and locks the door behind her, trapping Julia inside. Henry is already on the road with the Grants and has no idea what is happening.
