Nigerian men criticised after woman says women can succeed without a man
A Nigerian woman living in Canada, Chisara Agoha has criticised Nigerian men for their response to women who say they can succeed without a man, after her younger sister faced a backlash over a TikTok comment.
Chisara said her sister’s remarks about succeeding without a man triggered reactions from several men, with some attacking her in the comment section while others sent her private messages.
In a post addressing the incident, Chisara accused some Nigerian men of basing their self-worth on women needing them, even when they offer little in relationships.
“I have never seen a group of men as easily triggered as Nigerian men,” she wrote.
“Most Nigerian men have built their self-worth around women needing them, even when they offer less than the bare minimum.”
According to Chisara, her sister’s TikTok comment about not needing a man to succeed prompted some men to react angrily.
She said some of them went beyond commenting publicly and contacted her sister privately.
Chisara also shared details about one man who had repeatedly greeted and introduced himself to her sister, but received no response.
She said the man later sent her sister a message, which she included in her post as a screenshot.
The incident prompted Chisara to question why some men react strongly when women express a desire to live independently or pursue success without marriage or a male partner.
