NEWS IN: Ruto Announces Completion Date For Multi-billion Road Project Linking Western Kenya
President William Ruto has brought forward the completion deadline for the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway to April 2027, setting a new target for the major road project connecting Nairobi and the Rift Valley.
Speaking during a church service at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Likuyani Constituency on Sunday, October 11, Ruto said the first phase of the Northern Corridor highway would reach Mau Summit by April next year, two months earlier than the previous June deadline.
“I will open the road in April 2027. That is when we will begin the construction of the Mau Summit-Malaba highway,” Ruto said.
The President explained that the project would improve transport between Mombasa and neighbouring countries, particularly Uganda, by easing congestion along the busy Northern Corridor.
He added that different sections of the highway would have four to six lanes, depending on the location, with the government also seeking to generate revenue from the road.
The 175-kilometre Rironi-Mau Summit project is being implemented in phases, with construction activities expected to open some sections to motorists before the end of 2026.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has separately announced that the Rironi-Naivasha section is expected to be fully dualled by October 30, 2026.
Chirchir said the government would then continue expanding the highway from Gilgil towards Nakuru and eventually Mau Summit.
The government is also preparing for the second phase of the Northern Corridor project, which will extend from Mau Summit to Malaba near the Uganda border.
Ruto said a grant secured from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank would support feasibility studies for the proposed extension.
The planned expansion is intended to strengthen regional transport links between Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while improving the movement of goods along the Northern Corridor.
The latest deadline will put pressure on the project team to complete the first phase by April 2027 as the government prepares to begin the next section towards Malaba.
