Mourinho Boycotts Press Conference After Vinicius Red Card
Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho shunned his post-match press conference after Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Villarreal.
The Portuguese tactician opted for a total media blackout after the chaotic evening saw a Vinicius Junior goal disallowed and the Brazilian subsequently sent off.
Saturday Telegraph reports that the post-match blackout involved Vinicius Junior in the 72nd minute.
The Brazilian forward thought he had doubled Madrid’s lead after converting a cross from Jude Bellingham, a moment that even saw Mourinho sprint across the pitch in celebration.
However, a VAR review showed Vinicius had pulled the hair of Villarreal’s Nathan Saliba in the build-up.
The Referee, Isidro Díaz de Mera disallowed the goal and showed the Real Madrid star a straight red card for violent conduct.
The decision however left Mourinho furious.
La Liga officials told the waiting press at the Santiago Bernabéu that the Portuguese coach would not appear, despite reporters waiting for over 40 minutes after the final whistle.
The club provided no official explanation for his absence beyond the initial communication from league representatives, leaving the media to speculate on the depth of the rift between the manager and the match officials.
According to Marca, the silence was absolute as the manager left the stadium without addressing the events that saw his side reduced to ten men late in the contest, with Mourinho saying, “I’m not going to talk because I want to be on the bench against Sevilla and Barcelona.”
Vinicius later apologised on Instagram, writing: “The joy remains. Sorry to my team and the fans.”
Real Madrid held on with 10 men to claim three points, but the red card and Mourinho’s media blackout dominated the aftermath.
The Brazilian now faces a potential multi-match suspension that could rule him out of El Clásico.
