The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the handlebars “may crack or fracture during use,” which can cause a loss of control and a fall. The agency’s notice, issued September 3, tells owners to stop riding affected bikes immediately.

The scale is small. About 177 of these bicycles were sold in the United States, with roughly 52 more in Canada. But the bikes are expensive machines, sold between December 2024 and June 2026 for about $5,000 to $12,000, and the failing component is the one a rider is holding when it gives way.

The two reported injuries were falls resulting in minor abrasions, according to the CPSC recall notice. Not fractures, not head injuries, not hospitalizations.

That deserves stating clearly, because recall notices carry standardized hazard language about serious injury or death that describes what could happen rather than what did. Both statements are true at once: five bars broke, the injuries reported so far were minor, and a handlebar failing at speed on technical terrain could plainly produce something far worse.

Carbon fiber components fail differently from aluminum ones. Aluminum tends to bend and show visible deformation before it breaks. Carbon can hold its shape and then fail suddenly, sometimes with damage that is not obvious from the outside. That is part of why a recall based on five incidents across a small production run is a proportionate response rather than an overreaction.

Sixteen model and year combinations are covered, spanning the 2025 through 2027 model years: Neat RR SL, Dune Carbon XR, Foxy Carbon RR, several Crafty Carbon variants including XR, RR S, RR SL, Unlimited and Unlimited GULF, Level XR, Raze Carbon RR, and the Zendit RR, RR S and XR. The bare S9 handlebar sold separately is also included.

Owners are directed to Mondraker’s serial number verification tool to check whether a specific bike is affected. If it is, an authorized dealer will replace the handlebar free of charge. The bikes were sold through Evolucion Innovations, The Path Bike Shop and bicycle stores nationwide, the importer is Mondraker USA of Boulder, Colorado, and the handlebars were manufactured in Taiwan.

Two groups are easy to overlook. The first is secondhand buyers. A bike bought used will not have been reached by a dealer notification, and at this price point resale is common. The second is anyone who bought the handlebar on its own as an upgrade, since they may not connect a bicycle recall to a component sitting on a different frame.

Federal law prohibits reselling a product subject to a recall, which matters for anyone considering listing one of these bikes privately.

A third group sits outside the notice entirely. Bikes in this class are frequently used by rental fleets, demo programs, guided tour operators and shuttle-served bike parks, where the rider is not the owner and has no way to check a serial number. Anyone renting a high-end carbon mountain bike in the coming weeks can reasonably ask the shop whether its fleet includes affected Mondraker models and whether the handlebars have been verified.

Bicycle injuries are not a marginal category. Falls from a bike at speed produce head injuries, fractures, facial trauma and abdominal injuries, and a handlebar failure is a particularly bad mechanism because it removes steering control instantly and without warning.

The advice from the agency is unambiguous and worth following literally rather than partially. Stop riding until the check is done. There is no partial precaution here, no lighter-terrain compromise that makes an unverified bar acceptable, because the failure mode is sudden rather than progressive.

Anyone who has already experienced a handlebar failure on one of these bikes and sustained an injury should have it evaluated if they have not already, particularly for head impact. Symptoms that develop after a fall, including worsening headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, unequal pupils or loss of consciousness, require urgent medical attention regardless of how minor the fall seemed. Riders should also report the incident through the agency’s product safety reporting system, which builds the record regulators use to decide whether an action needs expanding. Consumers can also sign up for recall alerts by email and check notices from other federal agencies through the government recall portal.

That reporting step is easy to skip and genuinely consequential. Recall scope is often driven by the volume and detail of incident reports a manufacturer and the commission receive. Five reports produced this action across sixteen model configurations. Riders who experienced a crack, a creak or a partial failure but walked away unhurt may assume there is nothing to report, when that is precisely the information that would help establish whether the problem is broader than the current notice describes.

What remains unknown is why the bars are failing. The notice does not identify a root cause, does not say whether specific production batches are implicated, and does not indicate whether the same handlebar was fitted to bikes outside the listed models. A recall covering three model years and sixteen configurations suggests the manufacturer has not narrowed the problem to a single production window, though that is an inference rather than a stated finding.

This was processed as a Fast Track recall, a CPSC program in which a company moves quickly to a consumer-level remedy and, in exchange, staff do not make a preliminary determination that the product contains a defect creating a substantial product hazard. It moves a fix to consumers faster. It also means less published analysis of what went wrong, and no formal agency finding on the cause for owners to weigh.

Which bikes are affected? Sixteen Mondraker model and year combinations from 2025 through 2027 fitted with ONOFF S9 carbon handlebars, including Crafty Carbon, Foxy Carbon RR, Zendit, Level XR, Raze Carbon RR, Neat RR SL and Dune Carbon XR variants, plus the handlebar sold separately.

How do I check my bike? Use the serial number verification tool on Mondraker’s recall page. If your bike is affected, contact an authorized Mondraker dealer for a free handlebar replacement.

How many people were hurt? Five reports of handlebars breaking, including two injuries from falls that resulted in minor abrasions. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported.

Can I keep riding carefully until the part arrives? No. The CPSC says to stop using affected bicycles immediately. Carbon components can fail suddenly without visible warning, so easing off does not meaningfully reduce risk.

I bought mine used. Does the recall cover me? Yes. The remedy applies to the bicycle regardless of who bought it new. Secondhand owners will not have received a dealer notice and should check the serial number themselves.

Can I sell the bike instead? Federal law prohibits selling a product subject to a recall. The handlebar should be replaced before the bicycle changes hands.

What if I fell and hit my head? Seek medical evaluation, especially if you have worsening headache, confusion, repeated vomiting or any loss of consciousness. Incidents can also be reported through the CPSC’s product safety reporting system.
