Mokoena Reveals His Words to Referee During MTN8 Final

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena has disclosed what he said to referee Abongile Tom after Orlando Pirates failed to convert a penalty in the MTN8 final played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Sundowns emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over their rivals, securing the MTN8 title for the first time since 2021. The triumph added to the club’s recent success, following their victory in the FIFA Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup last month.

Mokoena was among the standout performers for the Brazilians, giving his side the lead in the first half with an impressive finish. His goal was his second in the competition and helped establish Sundowns’ control in a final that both teams were determined to win.

Despite his contribution, the midfielder was involved in a controversial moment when he appeared to foul Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma inside the penalty area. The referee awarded Pirates a spot kick, presenting them with a chance to level the score while Sundowns were ahead 1-0.

Ghampani Lungu took responsibility for the penalty, but his effort was stopped by Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The crucial save prevented Pirates from drawing level and allowed Sundowns to maintain their advantage.

After the match, Mokoena spoke about the incident and explained his reaction when Williams successfully saved the spot kick. He disclosed that he addressed the match official immediately after the penalty was missed.

“I just said to Mr Ref, God is great,” Mokoena said on SuperSport TV.

His comment demonstrated his relief, as conceding the equaliser could have significantly changed the contest.

Sundowns eventually confirmed their victory in stoppage time after receiving a penalty of their own. Iqraam Rayners calmly converted the opportunity to extend the scoreline to 2-0 and secure the trophy.
