Meghan’s come up with a plan to make up with Kate and William – but there’s 1 big problem

After years of explosive interviews, devastating memoirs and an ice-cold transatlantic estrangement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing to eat humble pie.
In an Express world exclusive published this week, it was revealed that as the Sussexes make long-term plans to settle into their new life in the UK, a quiet, sit-down apology to the Prince and Princess of Wales lies at the very heart of their strategy.
The couple reportedly accept that their infamous 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview went too far, particularly the explosive claims regarding comments about Archie's skin tone, and are eager to heal the rift so their children can finally grow up alongside their cousins. If Harry and Meghan have truly reached a moment of genuine self-reflection, they deserve credit.

Admitting your mistakes and reaching out to family after years of bitter hostility requires real humility. However, there is one fatal flaw in their master plan – a private apology behind closed doors simply will not cut it.
To regain lost trust, a quiet, off-camera reconciliation is precisely what the Prince and Princess of Wales would surely prefer. William and Catherine have spent years fiercely guarding their family's privacy, adhering strictly to the constitutional wisdom of handling internal grievances away from the cameras. They have no appetite for another public spectacle.
Yet, as understandable as that preference is, a private chat entirely misses the point of the original offence. None of the Sussexes' broadsides were private.
The damage inflicted on the Prince and Princess of Wales – and on the institutional integrity of the monarchy – was carried out on a global stage before an audience of hundreds of millions. The accusations made to Oprah, compounded by the intimate personal attacks detailed in Harry's memoir Spare, were deliberate public strikes. You cannot launch an international media blitz against your family and then expect to wipe the slate clean with a quiet cup of tea in the Cotswolds.
If the Sussexes are serious about a fresh start in Britain, the remedy must match the scale of the injury. Their apology needs to be every bit as public as their grievances were. There are two ways they could achieve this.
Firstly, a clear, unvarnished public statement. A formal admission acknowledging the hurt caused by their media campaign, released directly to the public and press.
The other option? A grilling on prime-time television. Sitting down with a tough, unsparing interviewer who will ask the probing questions Oprah avoided, allowing the public to see them face true accountability.
Naturally, stepping back into the broadcast arena carries huge risks. One only has to look back to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's disastrous 2019 Newsnight encounter with Emily Maitlis – an interview intended to clear the air that instead ended his life as a working royal.
Yet, that level of exposure is precisely what true accountability demands. A genuine apology requires vulnerability and the willingness to face uncomfortable truths in full view of the world, not just behind the high walls of a private estate.
Private chats may eventually thaw sibling relations, but they will never repair public trust or undo the reputational damage done to the Crown.
If Meghan and Harry want a real reconciliation – and a true future in the UK – they must prove their sincerity where the damage was first done. Right out in the open.
