Manchester City Beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield to Maintain Perfect Premier League Start

According to a report by the Evening Standard on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scoring after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off.

The victory also extended City manager Enzo Maresca’s winning start in the league to six matches, while Liverpool suffered their first defeat under head coach Andoni Iraola.

The encounter took place amid a hostile atmosphere following an independent commission’s finding that Manchester City had breached multiple Premier League financial rules. Liverpool supporters displayed a banner criticising the club, which has appealed against the decision, and jeered the visitors during the match.

Liverpool began with greater intensity, pressing City high and limiting the visitors’ attacking opportunities. Lewis Koumas, making his full Premier League debut, and Victor Munoz were particularly involved as the hosts looked to unsettle their opponents.

City struggled to create clear chances during the opening half, with their first shot arriving in the 35th minute. Liverpool also found it difficult to convert their possession into goals, leaving the sides level at half-time.

The hosts started the second period strongly, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma to save efforts from Koumas and Gravenberch before Alexis Mac Allister fired narrowly wide.

City subsequently threatened through Antoine Semenyo, whose dangerous cross was cleared, while Haaland missed an opportunity to score after being played through on goal by shooting wide past Alisson Becker.

The decisive moment came when Gravenberch received a second yellow card following a collision with Doku, leaving Liverpool with 10 players. City immediately took advantage of their numerical superiority.

Three minutes after the dismissal, Haaland opened the scoring by finishing first time after Doku’s deflected cross reached him inside the penalty area.

Doku then doubled City’s advantage, cutting inside from the left before curling a powerful right-footed effort into the top corner. The goal further strengthened the visitors’ control as Liverpool struggled to recover from the setback.

Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, calmly slotting past Alisson after combining with Elliot Anderson and Joško Gvardiol in a well-worked attacking move.

City’s comfortable victory secured their first consecutive league wins at Anfield since January 1953. Maresca was also able to withdraw Haaland with 10 minutes remaining as his side closed out the match.
