Man Can’t Hold Back Tears After Seeing His 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass Brought Back To Life
Image Credit: WD Detailing / YouTube.A neglected 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass has received a remarkable transformation after spending roughly a decade sitting in a garage. The guys at WD Detailing took on the challenging project, but it was the owner's emotional reaction to seeing his beloved car again that made the restoration particularly memorable.
The Cutlass belongs to a man named Ed, whose uncle originally purchased it brand new. The car also holds special memories of Ed's early relationship with his wife, as the couple used to go on dates in it.
Unfortunately, Ed's battle with thyroid cancer prevented him from completing the work he had started on the Oldsmobile. Although he had previously arranged for the exterior to be repainted, the interior was unfinished, and the car eventually disappeared beneath years of dust and debris.
When WD Detailing learned his story, the team offered to clean up the Cutlass free of charge and surprise him with the results. What followed was an extensive detailing project that also involved some unexpected mechanical work.
Getting the Oldsmobile out of its garage proved challenging, as the wheels initially refused to turn after years of inactivity. Once the team managed to free the car and transport it to their workshop, they discovered just how much attention it needed.
The trunk contained numerous loose interior components, including door panels and trim pieces that had never been reinstalled. There were also signs of rodent activity, with nests and debris scattered throughout the car.
Despite its neglected appearance, the Cutlass still had plenty of potential. The exterior paint was largely intact beneath the grime, although significant contamination had accumulated across the finish.
WD Detailing began by cleaning the wheels and pressure-washing the exterior to remove years of accumulated dirt. A closer inspection revealed extensive iron contamination embedded in the paint, particularly noticeable against the car's light-colored finish.
The team applied an iron remover and used abrasive techniques to tackle the stubborn deposits before polishing away the resulting sanding marks. This was followed by machine polishing to restore the paint's shine, transforming the Cutlass from a dusty garage occupant into a surprisingly presentable classic.
The finishing touch came from a professional pinstriper, who added hand-painted decorative lines to the freshly polished bodywork. It was an extra surprise that Ed hadn't requested or expected.
The cabin was arguably in worse condition than the exterior, with deteriorated upholstery, accumulated dirt, and evidence of mice living inside. WD Detailing removed the seats, thoroughly cleaned the carpets, and treated contaminated surfaces before beginning the painstaking process of reassembling the interior.
One of the biggest improvements involved the badly damaged driver's seat, which was sent to an upholsterer for a replacement cover matched to the original brown interior. The team also recovered and reinstalled the missing door panels and other components found in the trunk.
The result was a cabin that looked dramatically different from the incomplete, dirty interior that had greeted the detailers. Better still, the team had another surprise planned.
During the project, WD Detailing brought in a mechanic to investigate whether the long-dormant Oldsmobile could be started. After checking the engine and adding fresh fuel, the team eventually managed to get it running.
At the reveal, however, Ed was initially told that they hadn't been able to get the engine started. His disappointment quickly disappeared when the Cutlass fired up, revealing that the mechanical revival had been part of the surprise.
Ed was visibly overwhelmed as he examined the gleaming paint, fresh pinstriping, and reassembled interior. He was particularly astonished by the newly upholstered driver's seat, repeatedly expressing his disbelief at what the team had accomplished.
The Cutlass carries memories of Ed's late uncle and the early days of his marriage. Seeing it brought back to life after years of illness and neglect was understandably emotional, and his reaction made the entire project worthwhile.
