Mahama Jokes About Ayariga’s Marriage and Twi Skills, Leaving Ministers Laughing

President John Dramani Mahama has drawn laughter from ministers and other officials after joking that Mahama Ayariga’s marriage to Sunyani West MP Millicent Amankwah Yeboah has helped him improve his command of Twi.

The lighthearted exchange reportedly occurred during the President’s engagement in the Bono Region, where Ayariga addressed the gathering in Twi after being challenged to speak the local language.

Mahama praised the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister for his effort before playfully suggesting that his wife, who hails from the Bono Region, was helping him learn the language at home.

The President’s remark prompted laughter as he continued the banter by suggesting that Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza could also improve his Twi by marrying a woman from the region.

Ayariga had earlier acknowledged his progress in learning Twi, describing himself as being at the elementary stage while comparing his proficiency with Mahama’s more advanced level.

The exchange offered a lighter moment during the official engagement, drawing attention to the ministers’ interactions beyond government business.

Ayariga represents Bawku Central in Parliament, while his wife represents Sunyani West. Their marriage became a subject of public attention in August 2026 when Ayariga identified her during his parliamentary vetting.

The President’s comments were presented as friendly humour about language learning and cultural connections rather than a formal assessment of the minister’s linguistic ability.
