Kofi Adams Defends Ghana’s World Cup Spending, Says Mahama Government Spent GH¢55 Million

Minister for Sports Kofi Adams has defended the financial management of Ghana’s participation in international football, comparing the country’s expenditure at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with the amount spent under the current administration.

According to Adams, the previous government spent more than GH¢66 million on Ghana’s participation in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, despite the Black Stars failing to advance to the knockout stage.

In contrast, he claimed that the current administration spent GH¢55 million while achieving a better sporting outcome by progressing beyond the group stage.

The minister questioned which government demonstrated greater financial prudence, using the figures to argue that spending should be assessed alongside the results achieved.

His comments have renewed discussions about the management of public funds in Ghanaian football, particularly the cost of preparing and supporting the national team during major international competitions.

The Black Stars’ performance at the 2022 World Cup remains a reference point in debates about football administration and the use of state resources. Ghana exited the tournament at the group stage after recording one victory and two defeats in its three matches.

Adams’ comparison suggests that the government believes its reported expenditure represents a more efficient use of public resources, especially when considered against the team’s claimed progress in a subsequent competition.

The issue of World Cup spending has frequently attracted public scrutiny, with questions raised about travel arrangements, delegation sizes, accommodation, allowances and other expenses associated with national team participation.

However, a comprehensive assessment of the two expenditure figures would require a detailed breakdown of the costs involved, including the periods covered, the number of matches played and the specific items funded in each case.

It would also be necessary to verify the GH¢66 million and GH¢55 million figures against official financial records before drawing definitive conclusions about the relative efficiency of the two administrations.

Adams’ remarks have nevertheless placed football financing and accountability back in the spotlight, with the minister challenging Ghanaians to consider both the money spent and the results achieved by the national team.
