Kenyan Medic Explains How African Nurses in the US Earn Over KSh 1 Million in 2 Weeks

Kenyan medic, Amos Orwa, has explained how a nurse working in the United States could earn more than KSh 1 million in two weeks, depending on the hourly rate and number of shifts worked.

Orwa shared a breakdown showing how a regular floor nurse earning about $50 per hour, equivalent to approximately KSh 6,400, could accumulate substantial earnings by working 12-hour shifts over several days. His example has drawn attention to the earning potential of nursing jobs in the American healthcare system.

According to his calculation, a nurse working a series of shifts could earn $1,800 during the first set of shifts. Additional shifts would bring in another $2,700, bringing the total for six working days to $4,500, or approximately KSh 576,000.

Based on the same figures, Orwa estimated that the nurse could make about KSh 1.1 million over two weeks if the work pattern and hourly rate remained consistent.

He also suggested that some nurses earn considerably more than the $50 hourly rate used in his example. Orwa cited rates of up to $70 per hour, which he estimated at about KSh 8,960, although actual pay varies depending on the employer, location, experience and employment terms.

In encouraging his followers to consider the profession, Orwa wrote, “How many times will I remind you… Be a nurse or get married to one!” His comment added a humorous touch to the discussion about nursing salaries abroad.

The figures have highlighted the financial opportunities that may be available to qualified nurses working in the US. However, the calculation represents a possible earning scenario rather than a guaranteed salary for every nurse.

Actual earnings depend on the number of hours worked, overtime arrangements, tax deductions and other employment conditions. Working additional shifts may also affect a nurse’s rest and work-life balance.

Nurse practitioners and other advanced nursing professionals may command higher rates because of their qualifications and responsibilities. Orwa indicated that he would discuss their earning potential separately.

For Kenyan nurses considering employment in the US, salary estimates need to be weighed against licensing requirements, immigration procedures, living expenses and the cost of relocating.
