Jordan Henderson Reveals Chelsea Star Was Unhappy With His Stunning Free-Kick Decision
According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 11, 2026, Jordan Henderson has revealed that Morgan Rogers was initially unhappy after he took responsibility for a Chelsea free-kick during their impressive 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The experienced midfielder delivered a remarkable performance, scoring twice and providing an assist for Rogers. His second goal came from a cleverly rehearsed set-piece that left Bournemouth goalkeeper with little chance of stopping the effort.
Henderson stood over the ball alongside Cole Palmer, who was expected to take the free-kick. However, Palmer stepped aside, allowing his more experienced teammate to curl a superb strike into the top corner.
The goal completed Chelsea’s fifth strike of the afternoon, capping a memorable display from Henderson. His teammates subsequently encouraged him to pursue a hat-trick as Xabi Alonso’s side continued their impressive start under their new manager.
Speaking to Match of the Day, Henderson explained how the free-kick routine had been developed during training and revealed Rogers’ reaction when he decided to take the opportunity himself.
“We have been working on it in training for the past week or two,” Henderson explained, describing the preparation behind the beautifully executed set-piece.
He continued: “We said if we get it, that’s what we’re doing. Morgs wasn’t too happy but when we got there. He said, ‘Go on then.’”
Henderson also revealed that Palmer had jokingly asked which corner they would celebrate in if the midfielder managed to score. The former Liverpool captain picked the right-hand corner before successfully finding the net.
“I’m thankful to Cole and Morgs to let us have it,” Henderson added, acknowledging his teammates for allowing him to take the free-kick.
The 36-year-old joined Chelsea from Brentford on a free transfer during the summer, bringing valuable experience and leadership to Alonso’s squad. His outstanding performance came on the same day Palmer announced his new eight-year contract.
Chelsea manager Alonso praised Henderson’s all-round contribution, explaining that the midfielder had been recruited for more than just his goalscoring ability.
“We signed him for everything. If he’s able to score two beauties like today, we are more than happy for him,” Alonso said. “But apart from the goals he’s done many good things. I think that today was a very complete performance.”
Henderson opened the scoring after just 65 seconds, meeting Palmer’s pass with a first-time effort that struck the post before crossing the line. He then assisted Rogers, whose curling shot deflected off Antonio Silva.
Joao Pedro extended Chelsea’s advantage early in the second half after Evanilson had scored for Bournemouth. The Brazilian added another before Henderson’s spectacular free-kick completed a convincing afternoon for the Blues.
