‘I’m Not Really Okay’: Mokoena Opens Up About Brother’s Stabbing After MTN8 Win
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena has revealed that his brother was stabbed multiple times on the eve of Bafana Bafana’s match against Guinea, explaining that the family tragedy has left him struggling emotionally despite his team’s MTN8 final victory.
Mokoena shared the painful news during an interview with SuperSport TV after Sundowns defeated Orlando Pirates 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
The midfielder opened the scoring in the final, helping Sundowns secure their first MTN8 title since 2021 and end Pirates’ run of consecutive victories in the competition. However, the achievement came during a difficult period for the South African international.
According to Mokoena, his brother was attacked and stabbed repeatedly the day before Bafana Bafana played Guinea. He said his brother remained in hospital following the incident and that he was hoping for both his recovery and justice.
“It’s been tough two weeks for me, I lost my grandfather two weeks ago. I almost lost my brother who got stabbed the day before we played Guinea,” Mokoena told SuperSport TV.
The footballer said the experience had been especially painful because it came shortly after the death of his grandfather, leaving him dealing with two distressing family events while continuing to fulfil his professional responsibilities.
Despite the emotional strain, Mokoena still managed to deliver a decisive contribution in the MTN8 final. His early goal helped put Sundowns on course for the trophy, although he admitted that the celebrations could not erase what his family had experienced.
“I’m happy that we won, but inside I’m not really okay because it’s sad what happened to my family,” he said.
Mokoena explained that professional football often requires players to perform even when they are dealing with difficult personal circumstances. He dedicated his contribution in the final to his brother, who was still receiving hospital care.
The midfielder also expressed hope that his brother would recover and that those responsible for the alleged attack would face justice.
His revelation offered a glimpse into the personal difficulties behind a major sporting achievement. While Sundowns celebrated a significant victory over one of their biggest rivals, Mokoena was focused on his brother’s health and the impact of the incident on his family.
The circumstances surrounding the stabbing, including whether any suspects have been identified or arrested, were not detailed in his post-match comments.
For Mokoena, the MTN8 triumph was therefore more than a football milestone. It was also an opportunity to honour his brother while publicly expressing his hope for recovery and justice.
